Crane Operation Details

Crane operations within a 20 km radius of Darwin Aerodrome have the potential to create air safety hazards and may affect airport operations. To protect Darwin Airport's prescribed airspace, all crane activities must be assessed and approved under the Airports (Protection of Airspace) Regulations 2026 before they are undertaken.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring all required approvals are obtained prior to undertaking crane operations.

If the crane operation forms part of an ADG project, the outcome of this Obstacle Limitation Surface (OLS) assessment must be included with the relevant ADG Project Crane Operations Permit application.

3. CONDITIONS OF USE

The Crane Operator is required to read, understand, and acknowledge the following conditions:

Certify that all information provided within this application is true, accurate, and complete.
Agree to notify the DIA Operations Department on 0402 088 145 of any changes to the above particulars including when Crane Operations have been completed earlier than the advised completion time;
Ensure the crane is lowered and in a safe stowed position outside the approved daily operating hours.
Comply with any direction issued by DIA Operations to immediately lower or cease crane operations during periods of low visibility, adverse conditions, or to accommodate arriving and departing aircraft.
Acknowledge that failure to comply with directions issued by DIA Operations may result in future crane permit applications being refused.
Understand that approval is required before undertaking any crane operation or other controlled activity that may intrude into prescribed airspace under Part 12 of the Airports Act 1996 and the Airports (Protection of Airspace) Regulations 2026. Conducting a controlled activity without the required approval may constitute an offence under the Act.
Understand that any approval granted may be subject to conditions, and crane operations must be conducted in accordance with all approval conditions and any directions issued by DIA Operations. Failure to comply with approval conditions may constitute an offence under the Airports Act 1996.
Understand that all information provided in relation to a proposed crane activity must be accurate, complete, and kept up to date, and that additional information may be requested by the approving authority to assess the application. Failure to provide relevant information may result in refusal, variation, or revocation of an approval and may constitute an offence under the Airports Act 1996.
Where crane operations are associated with an ADG project, approval must also be obtained from the relevant Project Manager prior to commencing works.
